AI Doesn’t Replace Readiness. It Exposes It.

Everyone is talking about AI. Fewer organizations are asking whether they’re actually ready for it.

Over the past year, I’ve worked with nonprofits, businesses, and public sector organizations that were genuinely excited about what AI could do for them. Nearly all of them started in the same place: “Which AI tool should we buy?” That turned out to be the wrong question.

The organizations that succeed with AI don’t start with technology

They start with clarity—clarity about the problem they’re solving, whether their data is trustworthy, who owns decisions, what governance looks like, and how their people will adapt to new ways of working.

Chasing solutions before readiness

I’ve seen organizations chase grants before they were grant-ready. I’ve seen them buy software before they had a process. I’ve seen them automate workflows they never optimized in the first place.

In every case, the technology didn’t create the problem. It simply exposed it.

That’s what AI does. It amplifies whatever foundation already exists. A strong foundation becomes a competitive advantage. A weak one becomes visible faster.

Building the foundation first

That realization is what led me to develop the StAIR-Ready™ methodology and to make it the foundation of my work today. Whether the conversation is AI, digital transformation, project delivery, or funding strategy, readiness almost always determines success long before the technology does. Build the foundation first. The technology can wait.
