What If You Were Named AI Accountability Officer Tomorrow?

Not in theory. Not in a policy document. Starting tomorrow. Your first meeting is on Monday. What do you actually do?

Most organizations reach for paperwork first — policies, committees, risk statements. But accountability isn’t a document. It’s operational. It lives in the moment a decision gets made, not in the deck that describes how decisions should get made.

Here’s where I’d start — five moves in the first week:

• Map every AI-influenced decision touching revenue, employment, safety, or compliance.
• Assign a named human owner to each one. Not a team. A person.
• Confirm a real review checkpoint exists before execution, not after.
• Test the override mechanism. Not that it exists — that it works.
• Require documentation at the moment of decision, not months later, when no one remembers why.

No grand framework. No 80-slide governance deck. Just structural clarity. Accountability doesn’t fail in strategy meetings. It fails at execution — when the decision is live, the pressure is real, and no one knows whose call it is.

AI doesn’t need more enthusiasm. It needs a decision architecture.
