Nonprofits Need to Be Cyber-Ready, Too

Nonprofits Need to Be Cyber-Ready, Too

Blog post image

For years, I’ve focused on a simple question: Is your organization ready for what comes next?

That question led to StAIR-Ready™ — a five-dimension approach to organizational readiness: Strategy. Data. People. Technology. Governance. But as I’ve worked with nonprofits on Grant-Ready™ and AI readiness, one thing has become increasingly clear:

Cyber readiness can’t be treated as a separate IT issue

A nonprofit may hold donor information, employee records, financial data, grant documentation, participant information, and credentials to critical systems. Yet smaller organizations often don’t have a cybersecurity team — or even dedicated IT staff.

That doesn’t mean they need to become cybersecurity experts. It means they need to become cyber-ready.

Applying StAIR-Ready™ to Cybersecurity

I’m beginning to apply the same StAIR-Ready™ thinking to cybersecurity:

A Practical Approach for Nonprofits

For nonprofits, cybersecurity readiness isn’t about buying the latest security product or building a miniature security department. It’s about understanding your risks, setting priorities, and improving deliberately — based on your organization’s size, mission, resources, and responsibilities.

Grant-Ready. AI-Ready. Cyber-Ready. Readiness isn’t a purchase. It’s a discipline.

Where to Begin?

If your board hasn’t asked, “What happens if we’re breached?” — that may be a good place to start. I’m developing how the StAIR-Ready™ framework can help nonprofits assess cyber readiness without requiring them to become cybersecurity experts.
